Tragic Demise of Nigerian Footballer Abubakar Lawal in Kampala Shopping Mall

The Ugandan police have launched an investigation into the untimely death of Nigerian professional footballer Abubakar Lawal, who reportedly fell from the third-floor balcony of the Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala on February 24, 2025. 


Incident Details


According to preliminary reports, Lawal, aged 29, arrived at the mall in his vehicle to visit his friend, Tanzanian national Omary Naima, who had been residing in room 416 since February 20, 2025. Naima stated that she left Lawal in the room preparing tea and proceeded to a game center within the mall. Shortly thereafter, at approximately 8:00 AM, Lawal allegedly fell from the balcony. He was immediately rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 


Conflicting Reports and Investigation


The circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death have been mired in confusion, with initial reports erroneously attributing his demise to a motorcycle accident. This misinformation prompted calls for a thorough investigation to ascertain the true cause of death. In response, the Ugandan police have retrieved CCTV footage from the mall and are conducting comprehensive interrogations to shed light on the incident. 


Football Community Mourns


Lawal, affectionately known as the “Man from Sokoto,” was a striker for Vipers Sports Club in Uganda. He joined the team in July 2022 after a two-year tenure with Rwanda’s AS Kigali. During his time with Vipers, he played a pivotal role in securing the league and cup double in 2023. The club expressed profound sorrow over his passing, highlighting his generous nature and dedication to the sport. 


Tributes have poured in from the football fraternity, with his former Nigerian club, Nasarawa United, mourning his sudden demise. Ugandan footballer Mustafa Kizza also expressed his grief, remembering Lawal as a kind, talented, and jovial individual.

In light of the conflicting information surrounding Lawal’s death, there have been calls for a meticulous investigation to ensure justice is served. The Ugandan authorities have assured the public of their commitment to uncovering the truth and providing clarity on the circumstances leading to this tragic event.

Google late Friday countered a US call to sell its Chrome browser, suggesting a judge address antitrust concerns by barring the firm from making favourable treatment of its software a condition of licensing.
