Nigeria Secures $200 Million Deal to Power Rural Communities with Renewable Mini Grids
In a significant move to bolster rural electrification, Nigeria has entered into a $200 million agreement with WeLight, a pan-African Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) company, to deploy hundreds of renewable mini grids across the country. This initiative aims to provide reliable electricity to millions residing in rural and peri-urban areas, aligning with Nigeria’s ambitious goal to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix from 22% to 50%.
The project, supported by the World Bank and the African Development Bank, entails the development and operation of 400 mini grids and 50 MetroGrids. These installations are expected to enhance electricity access for an estimated 1.5 to 2 million people, thereby stimulating local economies and improving the quality of life in underserved regions.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between WeLight and Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the government body responsible for expanding electricity access to unserved and underserved communities. This development is part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to attract private investments for its Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) program. The country has already secured $950 million in funding for DARES, underscoring its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
The deployment of renewable mini grids is expected to reduce reliance on fossil fuel generators, which are both costly and environmentally detrimental. By embracing renewable energy sources, Nigeria aims to mitigate carbon emissions and promote environmental sustainability.
This collaboration with WeLight signifies a pivotal step in Nigeria’s journey toward achieving universal electricity access and transitioning to a more sustainable energy future.
