Nigerian Woman Declared Dead Emerges to Reclaim £350,000 London Home from Fraudster

In a remarkable turn of events, June Ashimola, a Nigerian woman presumed dead for six years, has successfully reclaimed her £350,000 property in London after exposing a complex fraud designed to seize her estate.

Ashimola left the UK for Nigeria in 2018. In her absence, a fraudulent death certificate was produced in 2019, falsely declaring her deceased. This forgery was part of a scheme to obtain power of attorney over her estate, primarily comprising her southeast London home. The individuals involved included associates of Tony Ashikodi, a convicted fraudster, and Ruth Samuel, who falsely claimed to be linked to Ashimola through a fabricated marriage to one Bakare Lasisi.

The High Court in London recently heard this unusual probate case. Ashimola appeared via video link from Nigeria to assert her existence and challenge the fraudulent claims. Judge John Linwood, presiding over the case, noted the peculiarity of a deceased person giving evidence, underscoring the case’s extraordinary nature.

Investigations revealed that the marriage certificate and death certificate presented were forgeries. Judge Linwood concluded that the purported husband, Bakare Lasisi, likely did not exist, or if he did, he was unaware of his involvement in the scam. Consequently, the power of attorney granted based on these fraudulent documents was revoked, restoring Ashimola’s rights over her property.

This case highlights the lengths to which fraudsters may go to exploit legal systems and the importance of vigilance in property and probate matters. Ashimola’s determination to challenge the deceit and the court’s thorough examination ensured justice prevailed, albeit after protracted litigation and substantial legal costs that could surpass the property’s value.

Ashimola’s experience serves as a cautionary tale for property owners, emphasizing the need for robust safeguards against fraudulent claims, especially when residing abroad. It also reflects the resilience of individuals in reclaiming their rights amidst intricate deceit.
